Cefazolin Injection - Quick Guide for Administration

For IM & IV: Add 3 ml diluents (concentration produced ~ 286 mg/mL)  1

INTRAVENOUS INJECTION

After recon, further dilute in a minimum of 10 mL of sterile WFI 1

Inject solution slowly over a period of 3-5 minutes 1,2,4

INTRAVENOUS

Infusion

After recon, further dilute 50-100 mL with diluent 1

Over 30 – 60 minutes 2

Intramuscular

Should be injected into a large muscle mass.1

Remarks

·      Each gram Cefazolin contains 48.3 mg sodium.1,4

·      DO NOT use reconstituted injection solution if there is any sign of turbidity. 1

·      Do NOT freeze reconstituted cefazolin. 1

·      Safety for use in premature infants and infants under one month has not been established. 1,4  However, a few neonatal dosage recommendations are available in literature.4

·      Paediatric:

ü  Maximum concentrations for peripheral administration are :

77 mg/mL in D5 ; 69 mg/ml in NS ; 138 mg/ml in sterile WFI.3,4

ü  Concentration recommended for INTERMITTENT INFUSION = 5-20 mg/mL4
