Treatment of postherpetic neuralgia

• Common complication of an acute episode of herpes zoster (shingles).
• Defined as "dermatomal pain that persists 120 days ore more after the onset of rash" which is characterized by stimulus-dependent continuous burning, throbbing, or episodic sharp electic shock-like sensation, stimulus dependent tactile alloydnia (pain after normal non painful stimulus) and hyperalgesia (exaggerated response to a painful stimulus).
