- The NPCB updated its webpage on safety alerts which was dated as today 8/5/2015 on a new warning of priapism associated with Ritalin (containing methylphenidate).
- Priapism is defined as a prolonged and painful erections which requires immediate medical attention. Some of the reported cases had been as serious as that it demanded surgical intervention in patients who were receiving methylphenidate containing medications.
- Priapism was found to be insidious and may be more likely upon an increase in dose. Also, it was not age-specific; developing in both children and adult patients.
- Healthcare providers should stay alert at all times and educate patients to seek immediate attention if patients develop abnormally sustained or painful and frequent priapism.
