Ciclesonide and Inhaled CS Comparison


 

Alvesco (ciclesonide) MDI 160 mcg/puff
MOH Formulary Indication
  • Prophylactic treatment of asthma in adult, adolescent & childn >6 yr.
Dosing:
  • The recommended dose range for children >6 years: 80-160 mcg/day.
  • Children 4-11 years: 40-160 mcg once daily; duration of therapy for efficacy clinical trials limited to 12 weeks; a safety trial in 661 children 5-8 years of age evaluated use for 1 year and 2 months follow-up, no untoward effects were noted (Gelfand, 2006; Pedersen, 2010; Skoner, 2006)
  • Children ≥12 years, Adolescents, and Adults:
 Administration:
  • Shaking inhaler before use is not necessary since drug is formulated as a solution aerosol.
  • With initial use or if inhaler not in use for 10 days, prime the inhaler by releasing 3 puffs into the air.
  • Rinse mouth with water after use to reduce incidence of candidiasis.
  • Do not wash any part of inhaler in water. Dose indicator will turn red when 20 puffs remaining; discard when dose indicator reads zero.
