Is antibiotic needed in Chronic Cholecystitis?

• There are no guidelines stating the use of antibiotic as treatment for chronic cholecystitis. 
• Antibiotics are frequently administered in acute cholecystitis for preoperative prophylaxis or postoperative treatment. The optimal timing, choice, and duration of antibiotics are unclear 
• Antibiotic prophylaxis can be given for patients 2 hours before the surgery.

Examples of recommended antibiotics for prophylaxis are:

• Cefazolin 1g IV single dose
• Cefuroxime 1.5g IV single dose
• Gentamicin 80mg IV single dose
