Rationale for Tazocin use in paediatric

Available Product: 
  • Piperacillin/Tazobactam (4g/500mg)
MOH Blue Book Indication
  • Febrile neutropenia, Lower respiratory tract infection, severe sepsis
Other guidelines:
  • Hospital acquired pneumonia, septicaemia, complicated infections involving urinary tract or skin and soft tissues, complicated intra-abdominal infections, appendicitis, peritonitis
Spectrum

Dosing
Frank Shann
  • 100mg/kg (based on piperacillin only)  TDS (<6 months) QID (>6 months); consider constant infusion for severe infection
BNF for children
  • > 12 years use adult dosing
  • 90mg/kg TDS-QID (max 4.5g QID)
  • For complicated intra abdominal infection 112.5mg/kg (max 4.5g) TDS
Product Leaflet/ MOH Blue Book
  • >50kg refere adult dosing
  • Neutropenia: 80/ 10mg / kg QID, in combination with the appropriate dose of an aminoglycoside
  • Abdominal infection: 100/12.5mg / kg TDS (product leaflet)
