TPN Activation Instruction

 

Additives:

If the additive is in a vial (bottle with rubber top):

• Remove the plastic protective cap  and clean the top with alcohol pad for 15 seconds.
• In a syringe with a needle, draw up the same amount of air as the amount of medicine needed.
• Inject the air into the vial.
• With the needle still in the vial, turn the vial upside down and pull out the amount of medicine into the syringe ordered by your child’s doctor.
• Check the label on the medicine and the TPN bag to make sure they are the same before you put the medicine into the TPN bag.

If the additive is in an ampule (all glass container):

• Wrap an unopened alcohol pad around the top of the ampule and snap the top off away from you.
• Take a syringe with a filter needle and insert it into the ampule and draw up the amount of medicine into the syringe ordered by your child’s doctor.
• Once the correct amount of medicine is in the syringe, take the filter needle off and replace with a regular needle.
• Check the label on the medicine and the TPN bag to make sure they are the same before you put the medicine into the TPN bag.
• *Take special care not to puncture the bag with the needle while injecting the medicine.
• Once the additive has been added to the TPN bag, gently knead the bad to mix the additive with the TPN.
