Antibiotic treatment for typhoid fever in pregnancy

  • According to the jounals, the choice of antibiotics in pregnant patients is third generation cephalosporin and ampicillin/amoxicillin.
  • However, due to ampicillin resistant in local setting, ampicillin or amoxycillin is not used.

  • Sarawak Handbook, recommended antibiotics which are compatible with pregnancy (falls on Pregnancy category B) in uncomplicated typhoid includes:
    • Ceftriaxone 2-3g IV for 7-10days
    • Azithromycin D1 1000mg then 500mg daily for 7-14days/1000mg daily for 5-7days
    • Cefotaxime 2g IV 8 hourly for 10-14days for severe typhoid.
